He used to be an employee of one firm in Luzon. Then he realized that there is more to accomplish when he becomes his own boss. Thus, the late Pablo Paras Sr. headed to Mindanao, specifically in Cagayan de Oro City, and put up his own automotive repair shop in 1951. The machine shop flourished and eventually became the Paras Machinery Works Corporation. When the founder retired, the company was assumed by one of his sons who looked for ways to harness his expertise in the metals industry and replaced the outdated facilities. With the new facilities, volumes of orders came in from neighboring provinces and nearby cities and the company opened branches in Iligan City which is dubbed as the industrial and ‘steel’ city of the south.

In the past, Paras Machinery Works Corp used manual machines and the manual operation did not ensure precision and quality requirements as ordered by its customers. This led to delays in reboring services.

In February 2013, the company sought the assistance of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST)’s Small Enterprises Technology Upgrading Program (SETUP) which provided the Digital Reboring Machine. The technology intervention enabled the company to go on digital operation as it conducts cylinder sizing set at 30mm to 170mm. Additionally, the machine created a momentum for innovation that brought the company towards production of quality fabricated machine and components and metal works services.

In less than one year, the shift from manual to digital reboring increased the company’s product sales and services to P12.8M from P12.3M before the SETUP intervention. From only five workers, the company now employs 54.

Through DOST’s SETUP, Paras Machinery Works Corporation is realizing its vision and mission to remain as number one quality highservice provider for engine reboring and other machine work services in Mindanao. The company is able to stand tall in the metals industry as it also believes that the core entrepreneurship is innovation.
