Mayor Jun Capistrano together with other officials of LGU Salay received the Face Shields from DOST

With the emerging COVID-19 cases in the region, the Department of Science and Technology-Misamis Oriental (DOST-Misamis Oriental) heed on the dire need for more Personal Protective Equipment (PPEs) to help protect the front liners in the province. DOST-Misamis Oriental has just completed the distribution of 1,520 face shields to all the 25 local government units in Misamis Oriental. This covers 10 municipalities and one (1) component city in District 1, as well as 13 municipalities and one (1) component city in District 2 on July 2020.

The beneficiaries expressed great gratitude upon receiving the face shields.

“Mayor Jun Capistrano was so happy with these face shields especially now that there are local transmission cases. These will go a long way to protect us here.”, Ms. Emma Baluyos, Budget Officer of LGU Salay, said.

The Department of Science and Technology - Metals Industry Research and Development Center (DOST-MIRDC) innovated the face shields to support the front liners in the fight against the current health crisis. DOST-MIRDC mass-produced the face shields using plastic injection technology; the same technology used in making cellphone plastic covers, plastic toys, and more. DOST-MIRDC, through the DOST regional and provincial offices, was able to distribute the face shields to the front liners throughout the country.

Aside from the LGUs, the DOST-Misamis Oriental also distributed face shields to other government offices in the province. Police front liners from the Misamis Oriental Police Provincial Office received 100 pieces of face shields for the uniformed men in checkpoints. Similarly, the City Health Office (CHO) of Cagayan de Oro City was grateful for the 250 face shields they received, since these are really essential for them as healthcare practitioners.
