Ventilator repairs at Amai Pakpak Medical Center

The Department of Science and Technology Region 10 (DOST-X) is now helping Northern Mindanao hospitals fight COVID-19 through a series of ventilator repairs from October 2020 to February 2021.

One of the concerns raised during Inter-Agency Task Force (IATF) meetings was the lack of functional mechanical ventilators in hospitals throughout the region. This concern prompted immediate action to ensure the readiness of our hospitals in treating COVID-19 patients.

As a member of the IATF and with the consultation of the Department of Health Region 10, the Science and Technology department formed a ventilator team lead by Mr. Ronald Pangan, Science Research of DOST-X. The team sought the expertise of biomedical engineers to diagnose a total of 30 ventilators in various hospitals. The engineers were able to repair 15 out of 30 ventilators, while the other 15 required more spare parts. They also gave recommendations on the proper use of the ventilators.

The hospitals that acquired the service were the Bukidnon Provincial Medical Center-Malaybalay City, Saint Joseph Southern Bukidnon Hospital Inc., J.R. Borja General Hospital, Cagayan de Oro Medical Center, Gregorio T. Lluch Memorial Hospital, Misamis Occidental Provincial Hospital, Adventist Medical Center-Iligan City, Inc., Amai Pakpak Medical Center, and Misamis University Medical Center.

"With our mechanical ventilators repaired and ready to be used, we can continue to deliver care to clients in the ICU who require such machines," said Ms. Lorelei D. Procianos, Chief Nurse of the Misamis University Medical Center.

Other hospitals also extended their gratitude by sending DOST-X their appreciation letters. They also acknowledged the help they got from biomedical engineers outsourced by the agency.

"We are grateful to experience the bayanihan spirit with DOH-X and the various hospitals that received the service. Many government agencies are now helping each other solve this health crisis, and this initiative is our portion of the pie.

Ventilators are a big help to our patients, and we hope to help them recover by facilitating the repair of the equipment," said Mr. Ronald A. Pangan, Science Research Assistant and DOST-X Ventilator Team Leader. (Julie Anne H. Baculio, DOST-X)
