To enhance the skills of the cacao and lanzones growers in Mahinog, the Department of Science and Technology - Camiguin conducted a training workshop for the local farmers in the municipality on April 27-28, 2021, at the Municipal Agriculture Site, San Miguel, Mahinog, Camiguin.
The training also aims to strengthen the farmers' techniques for organic farming on cacao and lanzones. The participants were able to perform the preparation of planting media and the scientific process of lanzones and cacao grafting and budding.
Trainers from the Camiguin Polytechnic State College (CPSC) also discussed additional topics such as Nursery Planning and Selections, Nursery Construction and Design, Preparation of Planting Media, Vegetative Propagation Techniques, and Common Seedling Diseases, Problems, Prevention, and Control.
"Dako akong pasalamat kay naka-attend ko ani na training og tungod ani daghan ko og nakat-unan na makalambo sa akong mga tanom. (I am very grateful that I attended the training. I learned many things that would eventually help me develop my produce)," said Mrs. Necifora Magriña, a local farmer in the municipality.
The activity is part of an ongoing project of the agency under its Community Empowerment through Science and Technology (CEST) program. It has a total fund of Php 391,000 and is a collaborative project with the Municipality of Mahinog. (Nice Nerjay Callo, DOST-Camiguin)
