The Department of Science and Technology-10 (DOST-10) assisted the Typhoon Odette victims in the Caraga region through the provision of Enhanced Nutribuns and other necessities such as clothes, shoes, and canned goods in December 2021 and January 2022.
The Enhanced Nutribun (E-Nutribun) is a food technology by the Department of Science and Technology - Food and Nutrition Research Institute (DOST-FNRI) for supplementary feeding programs during emergencies or calamities.
"The Enhanced Nutribun has more micronutrients like iron and vitamin A. The texture is softer and weighs 160- 165 grams per piece, which is easier for children to hold and bite. Each serving of Enhanced Nutribun weighing 160-165 grams per piece, has 504 calories, 17.8 grams protein, 6.08 milligrams iron, and 244 micrograms vitamin A," said DOST-FNRI.
The agency delivered the first batch of assistance on December 25, 2021. It comprised 15,000 pcs of E-Nutribuns, 10 boxes of food and hygiene kits, 3 sacks of clothes and shoes, and monetary donations of Php 16,325.00.
On December 28, 2021, the Caraga region received another 30,000 pcs of E-Nutribuns with the help of DOST-Caraga, headed by Engr. Noel M. Ajoc, OIC.
The Office of Civil Defense-10 (OCD-10) also helped in the logistics to deliver another 6,800 pcs of E-Nutribuns in the affected areas.
DOST-10 continues its passion in reaching out to people, especially in these trying times: empowering communities and ensuring that science is for the people. (Arianne Sioson and Julie Anne Baculio, DOST-10)
