The Department of Science and Technology – Camiguin ceremonially turned over project funds amounting to Php 739,186.00 to Hubangon Fisherfolks Association (HUFIA) on February 23, 2022, as a science and technology support to its dressed chicken processing facility.

Fishing is originally the main activity and livelihood of the association. However, due to seasonal catch, HUFIA aggressively considered another option to sustain the association and provide for their families basic needs. HUFIA ventured into chicken meat production until it continuously supply dressed chicken to various chicken meat retailers, chicken barbeque, and lechon manok sellers in the province.

The project, under the DOST-10 Community Empowerment through Science and Technology (CEST) program, aims to upgrade the production facility to improve the quality and productivity of dressed chicken through mechanized processes and increase the production from 3,600 kilograms to 7,200 kilograms per month.

HUFIA will receive a plucker machine, stainless processing tables, upright and chest type freezers, stainless cauldrons, digital weighing scale, pressure spray, and industrial fan. The members will also receive consultancy and training on Good Manufacturing Practices and Food Safety Awareness for an improved workforce.

The activity was held at the Office of the Mayor of Mahinog, Camiguin together with Mayor Rogerio C. Acle, HUFIA Chairperson Mr. Michael Maamo and his officers, and DOST-Camiguin personnel Ms. Nice Nerjay Callo. (Nice Nerjay Callo, DOST-Camiguin)
