The Department of Science and Technology – Region 10 (DOST-10) turned over a check amounting to Php 1.3 million to the Local Government Unit of Lagonglong (LGU-Lagonglong) on April 14, 2021, via an online conference.

The fund will be used for science and technology interventions on Abaca Fiber Processing to empower the Agro Forestry Farmers Association of Sitio Kalamansi (AFFASKA), Banglay Abulan Farmers Association (BAFA), and Roa-Roa Farmers Association (ROFA).

Lagonglong has approximately 70 hectares of abaca plantation that amounts to 74,690 kilograms of fiber per year. The produce is mostly from endemic abaca within the area. However, if the farmers shift to cultivating good abaca farms and manage them well, the amount of abaca produce would eventually multiply up to four times.

The Department of Science and Technology Region 10 turned over a check amounting to 1.6 Million to the local government unit of Kinoguitan on April 14, 2021, via an online conference to empower fruit farmers in the municipality.

The agency conducted the online fund turn-over to strengthen the partnership and linkage between stakeholders and empower fourth to sixth-class communities in Misamis Oriental.

Kinoguitan is abundant in tropical fruits such as mango, jackfruit, banana, durian, and more. However, the Municipal Agriculture Office reported that 470 out of 1,253 metric tons of fruit are left unsold and wasted during peak fruiting seasons.

Ten housewives of the Cagayan de Oro Resettlement Socialized Housing Project (CDORSHP-4) Homeowners Association in Brgy. Balubal, Cagayan de Oro City have generated income with its first silk cocoon harvest on February 14. They are project beneficiaries of the Department of Science and Technology - Misamis Oriental (DOST-MOR).

The project is initiated under the Local Grants-In-Aid (LGIA) Program titled “Establishment of a Silkworm Rearing Center in Balubal, Cagayan de Oro City: A Support to the Silk Industry in Mindanao.” It aims to provide livelihood opportunities to the women of Balubal for income generation within their neighborhood.

The first rearing produced a total of 14 kilograms of silkworm cocoons of which 8 kilograms were classified as Class A and the remaining 6 kilograms considered Class B. Class A cocoons are whiter and bigger than Class B.

The Department of Science and Technology Region 10 (DOST-10) is conducting free calibration of COVID-19 vaccine storages and equipment throughout Northern Mindanao.

To date, the DOST-10 Regional Standards and Testing Laboratories (RSTL) calibrated a total of 9 bio-refrigerators, 3 refrigerators, 13 wall and dial thermometers, 1 freezer, and 8 thermo-hygrometers from different health units in Region 10.

According to RSTL Head Engr. Frumencio B. Quiblat, Jr., "Compliance to the vaccine's cold chain is a must to ensure the vaccine's integrity and efficacy. Not conforming to its required temperature might waste the vaccine making it not useful anymore."

The Department of Science and Technology–Lanao Del Norte (DOST-LDN) handed over six (6) units of STARBOOKS Digital Library to three schools in the province on March 25, 2021.

STARBOOKS or the Science and Technology Academic and Research-Based Openly Operated KioskS, dubbed as the first Philippine S&T digital library, is a stand-alone information source designed to bring S&T information to the grassroots.

It aims to provide S&T-based educational and learning resources in various formats to geographically isolated schools and local government units throughout the country, as well as enhance the educational competence of students in its beneficiary schools.
